This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 129
How can it be the end of December already?! The year rushed by, and there is still so much more to explore and learn. Well, let’s start the new year with a look at some recent articles and videos of interest to InDesign users:
- Did you know that InCopy has a Transpose characters feature? (Look in the comments to get a script that works in InDesign.)
- Bart Van de Wiele shows a terrific tip about converting images to grayscale (in Photoshop) so that a) they appear just on the black plate in InDesign and b) you can go back and edit the color-to-grayscale adjustment later. It’s a must-see-to-understand tip!
- Jeff Witchell has a new video that talks about the awesomeness of fixed layout epub (FXL).
- Here’s a nice tutorial on Create Beautiful Wedding Invitations Using Adobe InDesign and Typekit.
- You heard that Adobe is dropping DPS from Creative Cloud memberships, right? Branislav Milic reminds us that DPS is not the only game in town for making apps from InDesign in this comparison chart.
- Did you know that Adobe doesn’t ship all the fonts it used to with InDesign and the Creative Cloud?
- Want to make a resume in InDesign? Adobe Learn shows how (with sample files!)
- If you’re heavy into DPS, you’re going to want to test your ipa files on your device; Keith Gilbert explains how Xcode makes it easy and fast!
- Do you know the history of Times New Roman?
- It’s the holiday season, so of course Kelly Vaughn is knitting and making InDesign cookies!
- You have print skills, but you want to work on the Web or on-screen? Check out Roberto Blake’s article Translating Print Skills to Web Design.
- I really loved this video about the octothorp (hashtag, pound sign, whatever you want to call it)
- Here’s a fun article with some fun typographic tricks designers should know
- Speaking of typography, Adobe is showing some big love to the typographic community these days, with the creation of the Adobe Typography Customer Advisory Board.
- I enjoyed reading this article about how Amazon is trying to create the perfect piece of reading software/hardware.
- Can you learn to be creative? Sure!
Enjoy!
This one reverses 2 words. it was made for me by someone on the adobe forum, so all the credits go to the creator.
p = app.selection[0].parentStory;
i = app.selection[0].insertionPoints[0].index;
wrds = p.words.everyItem().getElements();
w = 0;
while (wrds[w+1].index <= i) w++;
p.characters.itemByRange(wrds[w].characters[0],p.characters[wrds[w+1].characters[0].index-1]).move(LocationOptions.AFTER, p.characters[wrds[w+1].characters[-1].index+1]);
Gert: That is an interesting script, though it appears that it only reverses the first two words of a story (and you have to have the frame selected). Not sure how that’s helpful?
(For those who don’t know how to install that script, see this post about how to install a script you’ve found in an article or forum.)
@david: this is the thread to the post

As said i that post, we often have to switch 2 words over en over again, but not always, so a F&C wasn’t a good option.
